What to Expect Before & After Surgery

surgery for dogs in Gastonia, NCAt Dickson Animal Clinic, a critical component to any surgery is your involvement as a pet owner. During your preoperative appointment with one of our friendly Gastonia veterinarians, we'll review your pet's treatment options based on factors like their exam results, medical history, and age. At this time, we'll discuss the details of the procedures and answer any questions you may have.

Once you've selected a treatment option, we'll take the time to go over preoperative information. This includes any dietary restrictions, medications, and drop-off instructions.

Following your pet's surgery, we'll call you to let you know how the procedure went and when they'll be ready to pick up. During this time, we'll review post-operative care, including dietary restrictions, incision care, and follow-up visits. We're passionate about ensuring your pet experiences as little pain and discomfort during the recovery process as possible. That's why we'll work with you to create a comprehensive pain management plan.

An Emphasis on Comfort

Your pet's relaxation and comfort are critical components to their surgical procedure. When we admit your family member, our team will administer a tranquilizer to reduce their anxiety. In addition, we'll place them under a warmer during surgery to prevent them from feeling cold and surround them with blankets after the procedure is complete.

Veterinary Surgery FAQs

We understand that you may have numerous questions about your pet undergoing surgery. Our team is here to answer any questions you may have and ensure you're fully informed during the procedure. Some common questions include:

Can I feed my pet before surgery?

Your pet must come in on an empty stomach. It reduces the chance of regurgitation and aspiration during surgery. Your Gastonia veterinarian will go over how long you should withhold food before their visit, but the typical timeframe is 8 to 10 hours before their procedure.

Your pet will be closely monitored during their treatment. We'll watch your pet's heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygenation levels, and temperature. After completing treatment, one of our staff members will monitor them for any potential signs of complication.

Bring your pet in as soon as possible. We'll perform a series of tests to determine the source of the problem. If we're still unsure what the issue may be, we might recommend performing exploratory surgery. We'll create a small incision to look inside the body and perform an internal examination.
